Late Works: of Noise

Concept

Six original instruments sculpted by artists sit in a recording studio for six groups of musicians to come in (one at a time) and create a track (or more) each. The groups have six hours and are only allowed to sample from the instruments and their voice.

Lexicon

Inspired by Luigi Russolo’s 1913 Futurist manifesto “The Art of Noises” and his six families of noise:

1. Roars, Thunderings, Explosions, Hissing Roars, Bangs and Booms.
2. Whistling, Hissing and Puffing.
3. Whispers, Murmurs, Mumbling, Muttering and Gurgling.
4. Screeching, Creaking, Rustling, Humming, Crackling and Rubbing.
5. Noises obtained by beating on metals, woods, skins, stones, pottery etc.
6. Voices of animals and people, Shouts, Screams, Shrieks, Wails, Hoots, Howls, Death Rattles and Sobs.

In collaboration with:

Specifics

• Each track must only use noise sampled from the instruments. Vocals are allowed but all lyrics must be written in the studio time.

• Musicians may only bring things that modify noise, not make noise themselves.

• Each group can have no more than six members.

• Each song must be titled and mixed within the six hour session.

• The studio should include at minimum:
- 12 contact mics (+ cables)
- 4 vocal mics (+ cables)
- An interface (and backup laptop with DAW if possible, as artists should bring their own)

• The musicians in each group should be selected to correspond to a specific group from Luigi Russolo’s manifesto (this is not essential).

Lyrics:

Enzo Samuel / Silkarmour:

swordsmanship or sword fighting refers to
(in cooking, a sauce is a liquid, cream, or)
the skills of a swordsman, a person versed in
(semi-solid food, served on or used in)
the art of the sword. The term is modern,
(preparing other foods)and as such was mainly used
(Most sauces are not normally consumed)
to refer to smallsword fencing,
(by themselves; they add flavour, moisture)
but by extension it can also be applied to
(and visual appeal to a dish. Sauce is a French word)
any martial art involving the use of a sword.
(taken from the Latin salsa, meaning salted)
The formation of the English word “swordsman”
(Possibly the oldest recorded European sauce)
is parallel to the Latin word gladiator, a term for
(is gram, the fish sauce used by the Ancient Romans)
the professional fighters who fought
(while doubanjiang, the Chinese soy bean paste)
against each other and a variety of other foes
(is mentioned in Rites of Zhou in the 3rd century BC)
for the entertainment of spectators-

Geordie Greep / MC Spritz:

ah…aH…AH

yo…let’s go…ok

forging nine to five
no one left alive
when I take my sword
to the club tonight

got the fury like Tyson
got the strength of a bison
like a train in the night
good GOD i’m frightened

got this sword to wield
make them get on your shield
been working all day
just to get this blade

forging swords in the fire
really gives me a thrill
when i showed it to my man he said “IT WILL KILL”

feel the heat from the furnace
from the streets where I earn this
you better run from the steel
coming straight at your heels

Enzo Samuel / Silkarmour:

too many swords
chef up the sauce (got the)
cut up the olives
while i’m in the forest (got the)

too many swords
chef up the sauce (got the)
cut up the olives
while i’m in the forest

Aga Ujma:

If you take your sword
I’ll show you the way
through forest and mountains
the way dragons live
let’s tear out their flesh
let’s eat out their eyes
let’s play with their bones
and go to the club!

Geordie Greep / MC Spritz:

you wanna mess with me?
then come and you will see
can cut a million trees
this sword is T.B.E!

I can craft ten swords in a week
I am the man they all seek
when they need a sword
to dispatch their lord

deep in the forest all day
i’m always slaving away
to make a sword that can’t break
this ain’t no no-tongue blade

chimps in the kitchen, making lots of mischief!
can you hear the slash and the swoosh
when i emerge from the bush
take out anyone who dare to intrude
i’ll drop an anvil on your head
from the top of a tree
if you try to take me while i’m in the forgery

Jerskin Fendrix / Beth Dawson:

I use a sword to cut my onions thinly
I use a sword to dice up my chilli
swords in the kitchen honeylook who’s cooking
I got chicken in the wok
and veal on the skillet (huAH)

cuttin’ my rolls up
making all these sandwiches
walk up to the barracks like
“who’s gonna eat these sandwiches?”

slashin’ up goblos on an empty set of stomach
ain’t gon get nothin’ done
but get slashed up by some goblins

GOBLINS ON MY RIGHT (and)
GOBLINS ON MY LEFT
I GOT GOBLINS ON MY SWORD
AND THEY’RE ALL BLEEDING TO DEATH

get home from the wars and
cook me up some casserole
I guess i’m the greatest after all (urgghh blergh)

Geordie Greep / MC Spritz:

you like that huh?
yer boy Jerskin
destroyin’ ears
destroyin’ microphones
T.B.E motherfucker

let’s go
slow dance slow dance slow dance
the last chance for romance
come on let’s go
everybody have a great night
Tyson Fury, heavyweight champion of the world
