Verity Birt (b.1989, she/her) is a funded, practice-based PhD researcher at Northumbria University and the BALTIC Centre for Contemporary Art (BxNU Institute) in Newcastle Upon Tyne, UK. This year, she was awarded the Christine Downing Fellowship at the Opus Archives and Research Centre at the Pacifica Institute in California to study the archives of archaeologist Marija Gimbutas. She has an MA from the Royal College of Art, London (2015) and BA from Goldsmiths University of London (2011). Verity has been awarded grants from Arts Council England, Creative Scotland, Northern Film and Media and The European Union.
Situated in intersectional Feminism, Verity’s interdisciplinary practice of writing, performance, sculpture, sound and film-making seeks to materialise enchanted encounters and meaningful intimacies between each-other and the more-than-human world. Attempting to break down discipline atomisation and cultivate pluralistic exchange, Verity draws-in methods and thinking from across the arts, humanities and sciences; from philosophy, history and literature to archaeology, geology and ecology.
Her PhD research is currently titled: Earthy Intimacies; Tools for Relearning the Human; an Interdisciplinary and Feminist Art Practice for Re-worlding' and gathers creative feminist practices for being human differently in a time of climate crisis.
